Crisis All Around, How to Deal

by Josslyn Streett, Reiki Master/Teacher for Rain Shadow Reiki

For those of you who KNOW you have chaos in your life and simply want help and ways to deal with it, scroll down to the HOW section.  Otherwise, please read and enjoy the full blog.

Crisis All Around, How to Deal

People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.”
― Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

2013 a Year of Light and Chaos?

One of the oldest stories in the world, good versus evil.
One of the oldest stories in the world, good versus evil.

This year was predicted by many psychics to be a very challenging year as the Light comes in to over turn the dark after the opening of December 2012.  This has, throughout history, not been a quick and easy task.  In fact, other than love, it has been the biggest theme throughout history of all time on earth, dark versus light, good vs. bad, angel vs. devil.  I am not one of those psychics who believed this will happen instantly as some did, and it didn’t.   I like to look back through history and past lives at the big picture to see how things have worked in the past to get a feel for how it will most likely go in the future.  Plus, my common sense part says “What is there to learn from instant healing?”  Nothing.  We must live the darkness to learn how to shine our light.  I believe we are spiritual beings in a human form and our human form does not change quickly or even easily.  It takes time and work, until we truly, on every level, believe it is easy.  Then and only then, will it truly be easy.

“Enlightenment can be a slow process, requiring dedication and discipline. It’s perfectly fine to rest now and then. You are not going backwards; you are consolidating and resting.” Dr. Brian Weiss

The Truth is Coming Out, Ready or NOT

So, back to the difficulty that was predicted this year.  The energy of Love and Light is stronger than normal but what that means is that people who still have issues in the dark must shine their light on them and DEAL with them directly.  This means that issues that have been dormant in the past are now bubbling to the surface and demanding to be dealt with, NOW. There is no more hiding, no more denial, no more pretending, they have to be dealt with.  For those people who have been on the healing path for a long while doing this difficult healing work, life may not be as difficult as it is for others at this time.  Those people may find themselves in more of a support position for many others, especially.

In the Way of the Storm

Driving into the storm
Driving into the storm

But, for those who have not done the hard work, the “look in the mirror and truly deal with it” work, or for those who are just ‘waking up,’ they are thrown into the eye of the storm right away with not much time to prepare and learn the techniques they need in order to learn from these situations and heal from them.  These people need to start acting on new and different ways of coping, learning and progressing before or even while being directly in the path of the storm.  Crisis mode.  There is time, there is always time (big picture speaking), but for some, this means that life has gotten rather like living in a real soap opera.  Lies can no longer be hidden.  The truth is coming out, ready or not.

The black moment is the moment when the real message of transformation is going to come. At the darkest moment comes the light.” Joseph Campbell

Crisis All Around

I have found, this summer in particular, that there is crisis all around me.  It seems like every client, every friend, every caregiver, every family member,  has been thrown into crisis mode very quickly.  Addictions, severe medical issues with loved ones, job stress, money stress, political issues are all bubbling to the surface in record numbers, all around and affecting the lives of people who were not affected before.  When I talk to other healers, they say the same thing is happening around  them as well.  When I talk to my clients who are not themselves in crisis mode I find that their family or friends ARE, and they are finding themselves being leaned on quite heavily for support.

 Take Care of YOU

Self-careAs a healer I see it as my job to be the support system for my clients, friends and family during these times of difficulty, but only if they ask for my help.  I’m very careful to not invade anyone’s boundaries.  Some people may see this as cold or uncaring.  I’m showing respect for their wants and desires.  I offer my help and it is up to them to make the next move.  Plus, I can’t help people who don’t want it or aren’t yet ready for it.  This is one way that I also protect myself by only helping those who want it and are truly ready for it.  I conserve my energy and help for those who ask.  But, that’s another blog.  In order to be there for people in crisis, most healers know, we must take care of ourselves first.  I’ve written about this before, from the mom perspective, putting your oxygen mask on first and what not.  But, I’m a double duty; mom, and healer.  I’m taking care of a whole lot of people.  Many caregivers get burned out because they don’t take care of themselves first.  I’ve gotten burned out many times, I’m speaking from life experience here, over and over again.  No matter how many times I say it, many of you will not hear it.  But, hopefully, many will.  TAKE CARE OF YOU FIRST!! TAKE CARE OF YOU NOW!!

Self Care Yoga

THE HOW!

Choose any of these that appeal to you and that you will actually DO.  DOING these on a regular basis is the difference between people who are happy even in difficult times and those who are struggling.  Pick two minimum NEW activities that you will commit to doing, and JUST DO IT!

  • Do Reiki on yourself every day with intention.  Do not wait until a crisis happens, be prepared ahead of time by doing Reiki on yourself and your loved ones, you’ll be stronger and more prepared when the crisis hits.  Work with intention on what you want healed within yourself for instance “It is my intention, Divine Source, that the Reiki will help to heal my thoughts and beliefs about me not deserving self-care first.”
  • Meditate daily– Yes, there is time.  Turn off the T.V. and get away from the computer and make half an hour to meditate.  Meditation is the single most important technique you can learn and do, to enhance your spiritual growth.  Seriously, and it’s practically free.  Don’t worry about doing it right at first, just do it.  Make it a habit and when you feel you are ready for learning more you will.
  • Look in the mirror – It is important to not just talk the talk but to also walk the walk.  By looking in the mirror you are facing up to the parts of YOU that you want to change, they may be ugly, scary or humbling, but when you deal with them they are not so bad.  The more you do this the easier it gets over time.  Reiki can help with this too.
  • Daily self-care energetically speaking – Keep your boundaries STRONG, multiple times a day!  Do a five-minute quick boundary protection ritual. Five minute boundary ritual can be found in “Don’t Get Dumped On” blog.
  • Gratitude– Being grateful for what you do have, even during a crisis, is critical to your mind-set and in your spirit guides and Divine Source being there to help you through situations.  Divine Source and our spirit guides respond to gratitude and positive emotions.  The more you put into your prayers of gratitude the more they will hear you and help you in other areas of your life.  There is always something to be grateful for.  “Thank you God that I’m still breathing!” or “Thank you God that it’s only a broken arm.”  There is always someone, somewhere worse off than you. Seriously, prayers of gratitude have gotten me through some very dark hours.  JUST DO IT!!
  • Join support groups– Be a regular part of a Reiki support group, a healing group, Al-anon, a knitting group, a game playing group, or any kind of group that gives you a close-knit support system for when things go south.  We all need supportive non-judgmental friends to help us through these difficult times.
  • Get professional help– have a therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, Naturopathic doctor, Reiki practitioner, hypnotherapist or some other professional who can be there for you to support you and to LISTEN when you need it.  These support people can be invaluable during times of crisis.  I work with a therapist regularly for self-care even when things are going great.  When you are taking care of a lot of other people, you need and deserve someone to listen to you.
  • Spend time in nature– walk, hike, beach, forest or desert, hug a tree, or at bare minimum spend fifteen minutes barefoot on the earth, any earth.  Stand in a potted plant if that’s all you have.  We all know nature heals but many of us don’t spend enough time in it, relating to it, feeling it and taking it into ourselves energetically on all levels.BeachWalk
  • Physical Exercise– Keep your body strong and your mind will be strong as well.  Physical exercise not only keeps your physical body strong but it helps to release stress and negative emotions, mind sets and toxins.  It’s called a WIN/WIN!

I’m sure there are plenty more but these are the techniques that I have personally found invaluable.  I pray you take this to heart and truly start putting yourself first, healing yourself with Reiki and meditation and stay strong so you are able to support others when they ask for it.

Love and Light to you all,

Josslyn

Reiki Quick Tip -Reiki Pick Me Up

By Josslyn Streett, Reiki Master/Teacher for Rain Shadow Reiki

We all have those days or times of the day when we don’t feel at our best.  Many people use coffee or other pick me ups to get them through.  My body doesn’t tolerate many of them, especially caffeine so I have had to come up with alternatives.  Apples give a great boost, just like having a cup of coffee.  I have an apple a day, usually for lunch.  But at about that 3pm mark, I still get the sluggish tired feeling.  Reiki is a great pick me up and I’ve already written how it can be like having three cups of coffee in one of my blogs which you can click and read.

But, this blog is about a simple and quick technique to do when you don’t have time to do a full healing or even a fifteen minute healing.  When you are stuck for time, here is a quick, less than five-minute Reiki Pick Me Up that anyone can use who is attuned to Reiki to give them that extra boost of energy when they are feeling down.  I use this technique often.

HOW

For Reiki I

  1. Sit in your Gassho, center and ground yourself and call in your Reiki guides of the highest order.
  2. Hold the intention that you want the Reiki energy to give you a boost in energy to get you through the day or whatever intention you feel is best for you for the greatest good.
  3. Starting with your root chakra run Reiki energy in your chakras from bottom to top for as long as you feel necessary or for about thirty seconds. (If top to bottom feels better to you, then do that. It’s all good and there is no wrong.)
  4. After running Reiki on your crown chakra run Reiki all throughout your aura with the intention of energizing you.
  5. Closing Gassho and go!

For Reiki IIChakrasLabeled

  1. Sit in your Gassho, center and ground yourself, and call in your Reiki guides of the highest order.
  2. Activate your symbols in whatever way works best for you until you feel the energy in your hands.
  3. Starting with your root chakra draw the CKR Power Symbol,  in your chakras from bottom to top. (If top to bottom feels better to you, then do that. It’s all good and there is no wrong.)
  4. After drawing CKR in your last chakra, draw a large CKR in front of you activating it and bringing it into your body and aura.
  5. Do your closing Gassho and go!

I Pray many of you give this a try when you are needing that pick me up and that it helps.  Let me know how it works for you.

Love, Light and Blessings to all of you,

Joss

A BIG THANK YOU to my teacher, Catherine Morris, for teaching me this technique as part of our attunement process.  So grateful for ALL you have taught me!!

If Mama Ain’t Happy Ain’t Nobody Happy

By Josslyn Streett, Reiki Master/Teacher for Rain Shadow Reiki

MamaAin'tHappy1I’d love to say my Great Grandmother used to say this to me and it stuck.  No…. no great grandma or even any cute old lady said this to me.  I have no memory of where I learned it, probably T.V.  But, it did stick.  And, in a world where mothers are taught to take care of everybody else first, this has become a mantra that got me through some tough times.  My kids know it by heart.

In the days when I still didn’t believe that I came first, I had to go to this quote to remind myself that I do in fact come first.  I am the most important person in my universe and that is true for EVERYONE!  And, it is true, if I’m not happy, my whole family is not happy.  It’s a power I never asked for and never quite knew as a mom I’d have.  But, it’s true.  Somehow, we moms became the barometer for how our family is feeling.  It’s a huge responsibility, but then so is being a parent.  Unfortunately for my kids, their mother happens to be a recovering depressant, a current invisible immune system illness sufferer and a practicing empath who feels the emotions of not only their household but the whole world pretty much in any given moment.

Weather Report for the Streett Household. LOL
Weather Report for the Streett Household. LOL

This does not always bode well for our daily weather report within the home.  Most often, like the weather where we live, in the Pacific North West of America, it changes constantly.  If the weather is sunny, you can always count on it to change.  Change is the only thing we can count on both in weather here AND in my moods.  So, being responsible for the moods of three other people and four pets can be an overwhelming responsibility.

Thank God I have Reiki and I’m Not Kidding

I don’t know if I truly agreed to this contract of being a mom, an empath and challenged with physical, emotional, mental and spiritual illness ALL IN THE SAME LIFE, but apparently I did.  I’m here.  Doing it.  We sign up for much more than we can chew while we are in that blissful place called Heaven and all things are perfect.  But, once we get here, reality sets in about the same time as our true memories disappear.  For many of us that is about age 9.  Bummer.  We all have something that makes our life a challenge or we wouldn’t be here.  Or, we’d be on ‘spiritual vacation’, which some people are.  But, unfortunately, most of us are not on vacation.  Most of us are here to learn and we work hard at it.

LOL
LOL

I struggled for many years without any guidance as to how to do this thing called LIFE ON EARTH.  I struggled, until I found Reiki and my Reiki guides.  I’m not kidding or making this up to make Reiki more important than it is.  It is important.  It is MY true connection to my spiritual Divine Source, my God.  It keeps me sane on a daily basis when I need it most; like when the kids come home from school upset about a bad day and won’t talk about it just stomp around, or when I home school my temperamental empathic 9-year-old mini me for four hours and desperately need a break.  Reiki is here for me ALWAYS when I need it.  There’s just one trick, I just have to DO IT.

JUST DO IT (Thank you Nike for the BEST Ad Phrase Ever!)

And, here is the difference in my life, before, and my life now… I do, DO IT.  I do it just about every single day and sometimes more.  I do it when mini me is at karate.  I do it when I’m sitting in the car waiting for my volunteer time at school.  I do it after a stressful day of dealing with hormones and homework and I do it to fall asleep at night when my mind is racing more than I can handle.  I do the Reiki whenever I feel I need a break, an escape.  I use Reiki like others use coffee, sugar, T.V., alcohol, even drugs.  Reiki is my drug.  Yes, I watch T.V., and do some of those other things too, but my body is too sensitive for most, like it’s too sensitive to drink coffee, take even prescription drugs or to ingest anything stronger than red wine.  I know, another bummer.

This may not be how it always is, but this is how it feels! We moms deserve this feeling every single day!!
This may not be how it always is, but this is how it feels! We moms deserve this feeling every single day!!

Reiki is Calorie Free!!

But, Reiki is calorie free and always good for me, and it always gives me a buzz that is better than any drug, so it’s a win-win.  And, with all that moms have going on in their lives, we all need something like Reiki to pick us up and help us feel better, stronger, like a Super Mom to get us through the day.  I know I do.  Being a mom is tough.  Too many moms are turning to unhealthy ways to get through the day and take away stress.  Wouldn’t it be great to have something that gave you energy, a positive spirit, a calmer demeanor, AND helped you connect with your Higher Power too!  ALL AT THE SAME TIME!!

Another good one to remember. Because we are the queen of our castle. Don't forget it!
Another good one to remember. Because we are the queen of our castle. Don’t forget it!

No, it’s not a magic pill.  But, it does help you feel better quickly and the more you do it, the more you feel good.  And, if Mama is happy then the whole family is happy.  Well, most of the time anyway.  This quick thought of mine, of course, turned into this long blog.  But, I truly am incredibly grateful that I have Reiki in my life.  Because I am a mom, I am a wife, I am a homeschooling parent, and I am a healer too.  I need a lot more support than “The Big Bang Theory” can offer me one night a week. So, yes, Thank God I have Reiki!!

Blessings to you all,  I pray you find your Reiki too,

Reiki Quick Tip – Reiki…Better Than Three Cups Of Coffee!

By Josslyn Streett, Reiki Master/Teacher for Rain Shadow Reiki

Coffee3RowMy husband, Robert,  is one of those guys that can fall asleep the second his head hits the pillow.  I’m the opposite.  So, I do my Reiki at night while I’m attempting to fall asleep.  This has been a lifelong issue for me, not falling asleep.  I remember as a child laying awake in bed for hours on end waiting to get sleepy, not knowing that this was not normal.  Now, the Reiki helps me to fall asleep within thirty minutes or less just about every night, its such a blessing.  For my husband, this obviously doesn’t work, he’s asleep right away, seriously, that fast.  This always amazed me when we first met.  I didn’t know people did that.  Anyway, in attempting to find a time of day for him to do his daily Reiki, bedtime was not going to work.  So, he has gotten in the habit of doing his Reiki first thing in the morning, before he even steps out of bed.  For me, doing Reiki at night, it helps me relax and fall asleep quickly.  For him, doing Reiki first thing in the morning, it wakes him up.  He says he feels like he’s had three cups of coffee.  (and, that was when he was OFF the coffee!)  The Reiki will do whatever you need it to do at that time, its brilliant like that.  Your intention helps it be ever stronger.

Reiki as a Habit

Photo and another great blog about doing Reiki as a daily habit at www.reikiwithmamta.com/reikiblog/2011/06/start-day-reiki-self-treatment/
Photo and another great blog about doing Reiki as a daily habit .

I am a very go-with-the-flow person.  But, when it comes to the first few months of practicing with your new Reiki energy, I tell my Reiki I students that in order to really make Reiki a part of your daily lives and get the most out of it,  it is critical to make it a habit every single day.  Right away.  Make it a priority in your life for that first month, and do it daily.  Find a time that works for YOU and do it at the same time every day, just like any habit you are working on.  Reiki is no different in this way.  Once you have made it a healthy habit then you truly will feel the effects that Reiki can have on your life quickly and you’ll keep it up, even crave it.

Mini Miracles

When you are working with your Reiki regularly in your life, mini miracles start happening right off that bat, I hear about these all the time in my Reiki students when they start working with the Reiki energy.  It really is amazing how the smallest detail is not too much for spirit to help with once we are working with Reiki daily, once we are ‘in the flow.”  From helping people’s stressful jobs going smoother the very week they start practicing their Reiki, to finding a little statue of their spirit guide quite by “accident” in a store they’ve never wanted to go into before, but were suddenly drawn to.  When you work with the Reiki, Reiki works within you.

Quick Tip for Starting Reiki Practice on Yourself, Creating Mini Miracles and Having a Happier “Go-With-the-Flow” life!

  1. Make DOING Reiki a priority for YOU!  IT’S ALL FOR YOU! When you are happier those around you are happier.  Simply tell yourself and your Divine Source that Reiki in your life IS a priority and you will DO it every day this next month.
  2. Do Reiki every day at the same time!
  3. Think about an intention to add to the strength of the Reiki healing.  Such as “Reiki, please help me heal any issues I have about healing myself,” or “Reiki, please help me fall asleep quickly and easily.”
  4. Then JUST DO IT!  You will be surprised at how easy it is to make this positive habit stick with you if you make it a priority for this first month to start.  It feels so good and relaxing you may even get addicted to the feeling.
  5. Watch for synchronicity happening in your life, these are mini miracles just waiting for you to get in line with the universe.  Once you are in alignment, the ‘coincidences’ happen ALL THE TIME!!
  6. Email me or comment here and let me know how it’s going.

Reiki is with you forever once you’ve been attuned.  But, it’s like anything else, if you don’t use it, you don’t get the benefits of it.  Divine waits patiently for us to DO for ourselves.  When we DO, we are rewarded in more ways than I bet you can come up with yourself.  Please feel free to comment here with the mini miracles YOU have seen in your life since you’ve started working with your Reiki.

Love and Light to you all,

Book Review & Excerpt- “Animal Reiki” by Elizabeth Fulton and Kathleen Prasad

Review by Josslyn Streett Reiki Master/Teacher for Rain Shadow Reiki

I am currently reading a wonderful Reiki book about using Reiki on our beloved pets and even wild animals, Animal Reiki.  (Please work on wild animals from a very safe distance.)  The book is excellent in explaining all the basics of how to do Reiki on animals and why, but my favorite part is the stories about the animals themselves and how they benefit from the Reiki.  I teach in stories and I learn in stories so this book is wonderful for me.  The authors, through their words, you can tell, are animal lovers and put the animals first and foremost in their work with them and Reiki.  The animals’ wishes are put first and all animals are treated with great respect.  The authors remind you gently many times to ASK the animal if you can do Reiki on them and to OFFER for the animal to take only what they choose to take.  I would expect nothing less from Reiki people, but to write about it, share it with the world so that others can also learn to care for and respect animals in a similar fashion is a wonderful service they have provided.

"Animal Reiki" by Elizabeth Fulton and Kathleen Prasad
Animal Reiki” by Elizabeth Fulton and Kathleen Prasad

I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves animals, who wants to do Reiki on animals or who just wants to expand their heart chakra to be more compassionate towards animals.  Working with animals and Reiki is a wonderful way to accomplish all these goals.  I’ve been reading the book to my 12-year-old son who adores his most precious cat, Half-Pint,  more than any boy I’ve ever seen.  While she sleeps in his bed with him many nights he talks to her, listens to her and does Reiki on her too.  Their connection is quite deep.  While I’m reading the stories out loud to him about the pets who get Reiki he cries for them when they are abused, laughs at their anecdotes and shakes and giggles with joy when they are healed or adopted.  I would highly recommend you read this book out loud to your Reiki kids to instill compassion in them for pets as well.  Who knows, maybe they’ll want to learn Reiki just to work on their special pet.  This book is a tiny treasure, easy to read and such a joy.

Please continue to read below for one of my favorite animal stories in the book.  There are many.

In Love and Light of our Divine Source,

Please ask YOUR pet if you can do Reiki on them, and wait to hear their answer.  I bet they say YES!

Nanuk Finds Her Perfect Place –

Nanuk was a lovely seven-month-old Malamute dog who had been turned into a local shelter as a stray.  She was transferred to the local Northern breed rescue organization, where two volunteers, Laura and Adam, committed themselves to helping her to heal and find the right home.  However, Nanuk had no training of any kind, was terrified of people and any indoor or enclosed space, including cars, and would immediately attack another dog.  She was exceptionally intelligent and an accomplished escape artist.  When she first arrived, she was severely underweight and had no familiarity with food, bowls or leashes.  Laura and Adam deduced from her behavior that she had lived outside and been almost totally isolated and neglected.  When I met her, Laura and Adam were the only people with whom she was comfortable.  They asked me to give her a series of three treatments in the hope that her chances of adoption would be increased.

A Malamute
A Malamute

During the first treatment I sat just outside Nanuk’s run and offered her Reiki, asking her, as always, to take only the amount of energy with which she was comfortable.  The initial thin flow of energy became a moderate one, but otherwise I could barely tell that she knew I was there.  She continued her usual habit of circling rapidly around her run, jumping onto the roof of her shelter and back down repeatedly, while constantly scanning for Adam and sniffed almost imperceptibly at my hands once as she sped by in her circling.  I was otherwise completely ignored.

Undaunted, and knowing from the flow of Reiki through me that she had accepted the treatment, I returned the following day for the second treatment.  This time, when I arrived, Nanuk looked directly into my eyes for a moment and circled for five or ten minutes with less agitation.  Then she lay down with her head on her paws and slept deeply for about 25 minutes.  An especially loud noise woke her, and she got up and did a quick circle of her run, but then she lay down again and slept for another 15 minutes or so.  I sensed a strong flow of energy and was pulled deeply into the treatment until a nearby voice said, “What did you do to them?  I’ve never seen them so quiet!” I looked up and noticed that all the dogs in that area were asleep despite the high noise level in the facility.  After Nanuk awoke the second time, she went back to circling and searching for Adam with no further signs of interest in Reiki.  The flow of energy greatly decreased, and I knew she was finished with the treatment.  When I started to leave, she tried to follow me, which surprised both Laura and me.

The third treatment was uneventful.  Nanuk took a moderate amount of energy, but it felt superfluous, almost as though the work that Reiki was undertaking, whatever  that might be, had been accomplished in the second treatment.  When I left, Nanuk made sustained eye contact, but it was not clear what the results of the treatments had been.

Two days later the rescue organization received an email from a couple who had seen Nanuk’s photo and story on the internet and had fallen in love with her.  They realized that she would need a lot of love, patience and help and felt that she would teach them many things while they worked with her.

They lived in an area of California known for it’s year-round cool climate (perfect for a Malamute), in a beautiful home set among trees on many acres and surrounded by protected forest.  The house had floor-to-ceiling windows throughout, and all of the interior materials were natural wood or stone, so that being inside was as much like being outside as possible.  The couple had no children or other animals, worked at home, and immediately built her a large run so they could work on introducing her to indoor spaces as slowly as necessary.  Within 20 minutes of meeting them, Nanuk bonded with the husband and stayed by his side as Laura and Adam departed.

The couple had a scare the first full day she spent with them: Nanuk slipped her leash during a walk and ran off into the forest, but hours later she returned and walked right back up to them.  After hearing the story, I felt that Reiki had truly brought the perfect home to Nanuk. – Elizabeth”

Reiki Lost and Found

By my husband, Robert, writing as a guest writer about his real life shoe finding incident for Rain Shadow Reiki

To read the first article Josslyn Streett wrote, “Using Reiki to find lost objects.”

Reiki Lost and Found

“In front of our house we have a 10 foot wide by 50 feet long patch of juniper bushes that came with the house. I’m not a fan of junipers, one reason being they “eat” things! Baseballs, squirt guns, toys of all kinds…and shoes! In true “Little shop of horrors fashion” our junipers “ate” a neighbor boy’s shoe last night.

Under the noon glow of the pacific north-west overcast sky, half a dozen of the boys and I climbed into, over and through the whole patch. We lifted, tugged and pulled on branches. We stuck our heads under the top layers and peered into the nether regions the sun had long ago forgot. We looked and looked for 30 minutes, covering every square foot (or so we thought). When we were convinced the lost shoe was not in the bushes, we looked around the rest of the yard. This too revealed nothing so I turned back to the dreaded bushes.

Robert scanning the juinpers with Reiki running for the shoe.
Robert scanning the junipers with Reiki running.

When I still couldn’t find it I decided to do a “Reiki scan” of the bushes, much like I do when performing Reiki on a person. I set my intention to find the object as I slowly walked the length of the bushes, using my hands to direct the Reiki and “pick up” on what area to look in. After walking half the length of bushes, I had an ‘knowing’ that my hands were over the area, but continued until I was ¾ of the way to the end. The “scent” had gone cold and I could tell it wasn’t at that end. I turned around and went back to the area, roughly half way, that I had stopped at before. I looked around, then feeling this was the right spot, I reached in and moved one branch to find the shoe lying there!

Reiki Success!!”

Reiki makes each and every part of our lives more successful, we simply have to work with it regularly for it to have an impact on our lives.

Love and Light to all of you reading,

Reiki Is Always With You

By Josslyn Streett of Rain Shadow Reiki

A Josslyn Reiki Story

Colorado River view
Colorado River view, lower Grand Canyon, photo by Robert Streett

Years ago when we lived in California my husband and I used to go on camping trips in canoes with a large group of his fraternity friends from college.  We would load up the canoes with camping gear, food, jugs of water and take off down the Colorado River for three days.  It was a blast.  The company was great and we loved getting away from it all, literally.  This was ‘dig a hole’ to do your private business, type of camping.  When I had my two boys I took a few years off and Robert went without me.

Our youngest was almost three years old when he went on his first Colorado canoe trip. He was a natural.

When my youngest was almost three years old we started going again, the whole family.  We took some friends of ours for their first time, a single mom, Cat, with her four-year old son Blake.  They were adventurers like us and had a great time.  However, the second night on the river Blake came down with a fever.  Cat came to my tent at about midnight concerned.  We were out in the middle of nowhere and she had used up the last of the children’s Tylenol when she put Blake to bed.  I woke up anyone who had children on the trip and asked but no one had any more medicine to give him.  Blake couldn’t sleep and was crying and very hot.  I had just received my Reiki II level advancement and asked her if she wanted me to try Reiki on him to calm him down.  She was aware of the Reiki I did and jumped at the chance to try something that may help.

Our family has always had a thing for rocks. Here is our oldest son holding a rock he found on the trip and brought it back in the canoe with us.

A Long Reiki Night

I laid down next to Blake and asked him if I could put my hands on him to send him some healing.  Cat laid on his other side and told him it was ok.  He was very cranky and hot and just plain miserable.  I laid my hands on his head and after only a few short minutes he calmed down and went to sleep.  Cat and I noticed that whenever I had my hands on him he seemed cooler.  He certainly was calmer.  After about an hour I figured that was enough so I told her I’d go back to my tent. As soon as I got up he awoke and started crying and fussing again.  So, I put my hands back on him and ran the Reiki again.  I tried a few times to get up and go at different intervals with the same reaction each time.  I finally asked her if she’d prefer I just stay in her tent all night and she seemed happy I offered.  I stayed all night long running Reiki the whole time.  I’d doze off at intervals here and there but held the intent that the Reiki would continue to run though my hands to Blake. As long as my hands were on or near his little head, he was calm, cool and sleeping.  I was tired the next day but so grateful for this gift God has given to me to help others.  When you have nothing else with you, Reiki is always with you.

We left first thing the next day, a day early to get Blake back home to his own bed.  He had an ear infection and was better in a few days.  Having the Reiki to help him sleep and be calm was a true blessing.

I had forgotten about this scenario until tonight when my oldest son came in with a tummy ache.  While I was giving him Reiki to fall asleep I drifted back to this story and felt the urge to tell it.  You never know what circumstances you’ll be in but you can always count on the Reiki being with you.

Reiki is Always With You

Once you have been attuned to Reiki you are always attuned to Reiki.  Even if it has been many years, the Reiki will still run through you when you place your hands on someone with the intent to heal.  If you have not worked with Reiki in a long time it may be nice to take a class again and get a refresher, even another attunement.  The more the better I say.  But, it is not necessary.  Once you have Reiki, you always have Reiki.  I suggest you USE IT!!  And use it often!!

Reiki for Depression

By Josslyn Streett of Rain Shadow Reiki

This information is NOT for medical use and should never take the place of medical care.  If you suffer from depression or symptoms of depression please see a Licensed Naturopathic Doctor (or your doctor) as soon as possible.  Naturopathic Doctors are medical doctors who use only natural medicines to heal.

Lemon Balm is an herb known to help moods.
Lemon balm is a favorite for herbalists treating symptoms of anxiety, sleeplessness and depression.

Reiki for Depression

Something I have difficulty writing about and therefore do it rarely is my history of depression.  I’m very open with people in person, with friends and clients alike, but putting it into the written word in a blog is a whole other thing for me.  I feel much more vulnerable writing to people I don’t know out in cyber space.  Where some people may feel safer doing it this way, faceless to some extent, I don’t.  My fear of judgement comes up and reminds me that I’m still working on that particular issue.  I’ve written a bit about me having depression in the ‘My Story’ section of my website.   And that was quite difficult for me to write about then and took the longest of all the sections for me to finish.  Divine Spirit helped me with that just as they are helping me with this one today.

Writing Because I’m Guided to Do So

For some reason Spirit is guiding me at this time to write more about it.  Maybe because it’s the holiday season which is often very difficult for many people who suffer from depression, maybe because it’s been a particularly difficult week for me needing to cry very badly and not being able to until today when it all came pouring out rather quickly.  And then I suddenly felt the need to write about it for the first time, and then cry some more.  Divine Source always has a plan and I have found, even though I am quite rebellious, it’s best to simply trust and have faith that there is a divine reason and just go with it.  So here goes, me going with the flow once again, despite my fears and possible consequences, writing about my personal history of depression and how to heal yourself with the help of Reiki.

Lavender is also an herb used to calm people's moods.
Lavender is  used in the 21st century mostly for its sedative qualities.  It calms the entire nervous system, relaxes the muscles helps with headaches and muscle cramps.

A Bit O History

Passion Flower is a flower known to help alleviate depression symptoms.
Passion Flower is known to help alleviate depression and anxiety symptoms and helps to calm the body.

I’ve ‘suffered’ through depression most of my life although it wasn’t recognized until I was an adult.   I’m the kind of person that always tries to put on a happy face in public or I don’t go out.  So rarely do people really know what is going on with me, unless they pointedly ask.  This is common I have found with a lot of people with depression, the “suffer in silence” routine.  We get very good at acting when we don’t believe ourselves to be actors at all.  It’s important to know this about people with depression in case you know someone, love someone who has it.  I’m not going to go into why we do this right now, this blog isn’t about that.  But, it is sometimes hard to tell when people you love are suffering when they don’t feel safe to discuss it.  I’m grateful that I have so many people I do feel safe with whom I can talk with.  Those friends and my husband and kids have literally gotten me thorough this alive and will continue to because they not only love me, they understand me and take the time to do that.  They take the time, a whole lot of time to listen, not give advice, not judge, just listen and love me.  They are amazing and I’m so incredibly grateful for them.

Stigma of Depression

Lemon Verbena with a light pink flower has been one of my favorites since the Little House on the Prairie shows
The cool and refreshing fragrance of lemon verbena increases energy, relieves fatigue and overcomes feelings of apathy, disinterest and listlessness.  These characteristics make Lemon Verbena the ideal choice for use on dull, overcast days at the office or hot, humid days in mid-summer and any other time when the weather and other conditions discourage productivity.

I’d like to get something straight.  Something that medical doctors will not talk about because most of them do not know or acknowledge.  Depression is NOT just a mental or emotional disease.  There should be no stigma to it.  It is not just someone who is way too sensitive and can’t control themselves emotionally.  Depression exists on all levels of the body, emotional yes, mental yes, but it is also a disease of spirit, therefore it also exists on the spiritual AND the physical level too.  Pretty much like any other disease someone could have, like for instance diabetes or heart disease.  They are all disease of the spirit first and foremost, then they work their way into our other spiritual body levels from there.  All disease works this way so there is no reason to judge (there’s that word again) anyone who has disease of any kind because we are all struggling with something.   We are the same in that we are all spiritual beings in human form working hard at learning difficult lessons of the spirit.  Quite often, disease is a very fast way for us to learn these lessons.  That is it’s purpose.  (Plus, sometimes it helps burn off old karma.  But that’s another blog.)

Medical Doctors, Don’t Get Me Started

Yellow hibiscus
Yellow hibiscus aids in decreased depression and mood swings. The minerals and vitamins in hibiscus tea can contribute to a more positive frame of mind and calming of the nervous system.

I saw many, many different medical experts who could not figure me out.  One after another they would pass me around trying to figure out why I wouldn’t respond to the drugs they were peddling.  Why they couldn’t FIX me.  They tried me on each and every depression med they had including bipolar medications. “Hey I didn’t respond to the depression meds,  I must be bipolar right?”  I was their guinea pig and I didn’t, at the time, know any better.  ALL of the medications gave me such severe side effects that I couldn’t safely take them.  My body was simply too sensitive for any man-made medications, but I didn’t know that at the time.  Plus, their drugs were only treating one symptom, , one level of my body, not getting close to treating the cause.  Truly no one seemed at all worried about finding the cause.  Those doctors gave up on me. I didn’t fit in their box. They said I was permanently disabled and could not work or be of use to society, and I believed them and sometimes still do.  Some days, on days like today, I feel like they were right.  But, they aren’t.  I know that deep down.  And, it’s up to me (and my soul mate friends and family) to remind me of that, over and over again until my subconscious mind believes it one day.

A Gift

Those doctors giving up on me was the best thing that ever happened to me.   Although at the time I felt totally left alone on the edge of a cliff.  When I felt I had no other options, no other alternatives at all, I was then able to open up to concepts I had never considered.  This is when most clients come to me as a Reiki practitioner too, when nothing else has worked and they feel they are out of possibilities.  Suddenly healing with hands isn’t so crazy any more.  Right?  I’m chuckling here because I was no different.  It is part of the process that we must go through in order to open our “box”, our mind to new possibilities, new beliefs.  Through the process I found alternative medicine.  Alternative doctors who listened and were willing to experiment and try new things with me.  And I found Reiki.

Sensitivities Can Be Blessings in Disguise

Orange roses
The rose has an uplifting restoring, and calming effect on the nervous system, lifts depression, dispels mental and physical fatigue, and soothes irritability, grief, and anger; the essential oil can also be used for depression, especially that caused by lack of love or intimacy in one’s life.

In my case, my body is still so challenging that it takes a pretty large team of alternative practitioners to work with me on a monthly basis to keep me balanced and functioning.  I sometimes forget that this way of life is not normal for some because I’ve been doing it for so long.  But for me listening to and working with my body on a daily, sometimes hourly basis is normal and a must.  Yes, part of my sensitivities also give me my wonderful gifts of intuitive ability, compassion and understand, and my ability to run a whole lot of Reiki energy to heal others.

Hang in There We Are Almost There……….

Reiki for Depression

I have no studies to show you to prove what I’m going to say but only my own personal experience.  These are my opinions from what I’ve learned though my years of working with Reiki for my depression.

When I first started seeing natural doctors, Naturopaths, they did all sorts of tests on me too, just like the medical doctors.  I had one tell me that my serotonin levels were non-existent.  She was amazed I was functioning at all, and told me this.  I could see the shock on her face that I was sitting in front of her and her knowing that I had an active, a mom, a healer and rewarding life much of the time.  She came right out and said that she was literally shocked that I wasn’t in an insane asylum with levels so low.  “Do they still have those?  Damn I thought, seriously?!”  At the time I didn’t consider myself very functioning, although I was a full-time mom at this point with two very young little boys and doing my best.  (I have very high expectations) She asked what I did to keep myself so healthy considering what I was dealing with physically.  I told her besides my overtly healthy diet, that I also did a lot of meditation and Reiki.  She told me to keep it up and put me on some natural neurotransmitters to help support my brain function.  They help so much.

Puzzle Pieces to Healing Depression

Red valerian
Valerian, or Valeriana officinalis, is a plant root that is either ground into a powder or pressed into a liquid and used to treat depression naturally.  Valerian has been used to treat symptoms of depression as well as minor aches and pains, mild tremors, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, nervous asthma, hysteria, excitability and even phobias.  As always it is imperative to consult with a licensed health professional before embarking on any herbal regimen.  I truly believe this and do it myself.

Since then my naturopaths have pieced together different puzzle pieces that contribute to the physical portion of the depression.  I tell you here only in case it helps someone out there to look at their depression puzzle pieces.  Maybe you have a similar one to me that no doctor has looked at yet.  Also, I tell you simply so you know without a doubt that I have been through this and can help you though the process as well.  Here is a great book on the subject, “feeling fat, fuzzy, or frazzled?” by Richard Shames, M.D. and Karilee Shames, Ph.D., R.N. also authors of “Thyroid Power.”

The Physical Run Down

I have severe hormone imbalances that I’ve had all my life, not at all connected to menopause, a thyroid disease called Hashimoto’s where your body basically attacks itself and of course my body produces very little if any of its own serotonin and other neurotransmitters.  Oh yeah, lets not forget the adrenal fatigue from the stress of it all.  That is a simplistic look at it.  There’s more but that’s the basic gist.  My body is in a constant state of change, like anyones, but mine seems to be much more sensitive and can get out of balance at the slightest tilt.  I feel like I’m standing on a board, on top of a ball and I have to stay balanced there like that every day juggling kids, pets, husband, work/hobby, public school, crazy diet, housework, neighbors and so much, so much more.

An excellent book about healing these symptoms naturally. Hormone, thyroid and neurotransmitter imbalances.
An excellent book about healing these symptoms naturally. Hormone, thyroid and neurotransmitter imbalances.

How does Reiki help these?  How can Reiki help your depression or that of someone you love?  Stay with me a bit longer, we are getting to that most important of answers.

HOW Can Reiki Help Depression?

Reiki for me has helped me in every way it can.  Reiki heals on all levels, all at once; spiritual, emotional, mental and physical.  Reiki is Divinely Guided Life Force Energy so it has intelligence and knows where it needs to go to help you the most AND at a pace you can handle.  It never works on anything you aren’t ready to work on.

Spiritual

On the spiritual level Reiki is working on my past lives, healing those that may have created the karma that causes me to have depression in this life.  Reiki has also helped me to heal my issues that I had with God and Jesus and other religious figures that have been contributing to my fears in this life.  One at a time, a little at a time, Reiki helps dissolve the fears, the karma that I brought with me into this life in order to learn from it.  This is very powerful and deep healing work that gets to the SOURCE and takes time.  Stick with it.  Never give up.

Physical

On the physical levels Reiki lowers my blood pressure, calms me down and supports my body in any way that it may need it.  It can’t make serotonin for me but it helps my body to function better without it or function better so that my body can make serotonin for itself.  This I truly believe.  I have no proof, it’s just something I feel happening.  If my body is too stressed in other areas it won’t have the energy to finish all the building blocks in my brain that I need.  Reiki also helps my body to handle the sensitivities that my physical body has, allergies to new things like electromagnetic energy.  Reiki also helps me to cleanse and detoxify my quite often toxic system, letting go of what doesn’t serve me.  Letting go for some people is harder than others.  The people who have a hard time letting go tend to be more stressed, more over weight and more likely to get disease sooner.  Reiki helps to keep your physical body in balance so these are less likely to happen.

Mental

On the mental level Reiki helps me to reframe the old recordings that are playing in my head that contribute to the depression, such as, “I’m not worthy of being healthy or a healer” or “It’s safer if I’m sick”, “It’s not safe to let go of stuff” or “I’m not lovable.”  There are thousands of scripts in our head that we either learn from childhood or even bring with us from other life times until we learn what we need to learn from them and change them.  Reiki can help us first to identify them and second to change them into healthier scripts.

Emotional

You just know that puppies are good for people with depression. When I was going through my first serious depression I got two puppies and they were my best friends and got me though many very difficult times. Get a pet and allow it to love you the way you deserve to be loved.
You just know that puppies are good for people with depression. When I was going through my first serious depression I got two puppies and they were my best friends and got me though many very difficult times. Get a pet and allow it to love you the way you deserve to be loved.

On this level Reiki has helped me to feel calmer when I need it.  Reiki helps me to feel more balanced at times like today when I needed to balance out the emotions that were being created inside of me by the physical imbalance.  Reiki supports you in whatever way you need to get that balance back in your bodies.  Today I needed to cry, a lot, to get the emotions and chemicals out of my physical body.  I also needed to write about it, to share it or not.  I needed to get it out into words so Reiki is helping me to do that as well.  Reiki has become such an integral part of my life that it’s pretty much automatic for me to invite in the Reiki energy to help me when I’m upset, just like praying is for religious people.  This is my way of talking to my Divine and inviting the healing energy in to help me.  And it comes in exactly the way I need it most.  It comes and heals me.  And then, I say Thank You God!  Thank you Reiki!

“Patience is a Virtue, but darn does it have to take so long!”

Be patient.  Reiki helps me with this a great deal because patience does not come easy to me.  The healing process for many is a journey of discovery and learning.  A journey can take a long time.  Enjoy life as much as you can while you are going through the healing process.  Live your life as much as you can in between the difficult days.  If I waited until I was completely healed of depression before becoming a ‘healer’ I’d never be a healer.  You do your best, every day.  Do your meditation and Reiki every day and live your life in between and NEVER, NEVER, NEVER give up searching for your puzzle pieces to health and wellbeing. And when you need a friend to talk to, be your own best friend, call a friend who will listen or call a Reiki healer like me and let us help you.  You know I will understand.  I’ve been though much the same and can relate and be compassionate.  But, I can also see your beautiful and healthy soul and help you to know how to get to that place.

This life is a gift no matter what.  Never give up.

Love and Light to you all,

Reiki Quick Tip – Judge and Jury

By Josslyn Streett of Rain Shadow Reiki

Faceless Judge

I’ve heard a lot of people lately saying “I don’t like them” about another person or even group of people.  I’m more acutely aware of this because I’ve been working on this myself lately -JUDGEMENT.  Yes, it’s a big one for me.  How about you?  Would you admit to judging others?

Most people do but rarely want to admit it, even to themselves, especially to themselves.  But, if we stay with judgement there is no room for learning or love.  See, we are both judge AND jury, but really only for ourselves.  It is not our place to judge others.  Each person does that for themselves.  But, when we judge others, we are actually judging ourselves.  Every single person even animals are mirrors for each of us to learn from.  But, if we stay asleep, stay in a place of judgement, pointing fingers, we never learn what we need to in order to progress spiritually.

Pointing fingers is a form of judgement, but usually of yourself

So, HOW do we work on this area of ourselves?  Easy, with Reiki of course!

Here is a process I use and it works great.  Always feel free to add or delete parts of my processes that don’t feel right to you and add in parts that do feel right.  Make it your own.  Feel free to lovingly comment here if you add something that works great for you.

HOW TO CHANGE JUDGEMENT INTO SPIRITUAL EVOLUTION

We judge so we can learn about ourselves. See it differently and it will BE different.
  1. Catch yourself in a judgement –  For example, “I don’t like them.”  Stop, catch yourself in the mode of judging.  Acknowledge that you are judging but without judging yourself.
  2. Ask the right questions –  Why do I not like them?” or “What is it about them that bothers me so much?”
  3. Answer honestly – Don’t be afraid of the answer because it may not even apply anymore.  It may be from your past or even a past life.  Most of the time it no longer applies but because we haven’t worked through the real issue, it’s still there.  “Wow, I don’t like them because they seem like kind of a push over, they don’t seem to stand up for themselves.
  4. Look in the mirror – How does this apply to you?  “When I was young I got bullied and I didn’t stand up for myself.  I was scared and did nothing.  I hate that I didn’t stand up for myself and others.  But, I’ve worked though that and don’t do that anymore.  I stand up for myself and my friends and family and feel much more confident.”
  5. Heal the situation – Now having more insight into the situation you can now heal it for you and the other person as well.  Even if you have not worked on the issue at all, sending healing is the best way to deal with it and move forward.

The Reiki Process

Artwork by Durga Lael Bernhard ,
  1. Get your Reiki started and if you are a Reiki II or above, chant the symbols that you feel will be needed here.  (I would use all three Reiki II symbols because they cover different aspects that are usually involved including the long distance symbol in case this is a past and very old issue.)
  2. Visualize your self at the original time frame of the situation in the palm of your hands getting bathed by the Reiki running out your palm chakras.  Include the person you thought you were judging as well.  (Send them love and Reiki healing, they were a mirror for you.)
  3. Hold the intention that ALL situations regarding this judgement are being healed as well, even if you don’t consciously remember them.
  4. Having new knowledge of the situation, send Reiki Love to the situation and the judgement you had with the intention of healing it, for as long as you need to.  If this is a big issue for you, you may want to do this multiple times a day for a week or at least once a day for a week.  5 minutes each session should be enough.  Do it at the same time each day when you won’t be disturbed, like right before bed time.
  5. Many times acknowledging the situation and bringing it to the forefront of your mind (out of the subconscious mind and into the conscious mind) does much of the healing for you mentally.  But, running Reiki energy, getting healing and help from Divine Source helps to heal you spiritually and emotionally.

  1. FEEL the Love and Light bathing the judgement, bathing you and everyone involved.  This process opens up your heart chakra allowing the healing to get to all the chakras that have been involved in the situation.  Opening the heart chakra AND holding the intention that you wish to heal this situation will allow healing to take place on all levels.  FEELING the emotion and LOVE is important.
  2. Practice the process as often as possible.  Pretty soon it will become a very positive habit and you will be loving everyone, especially yourself.

Give it a try.  Please let me know how it goes for you.  The HOW is only part of the process.  The DOING is up to you.

In Love and Light,

‘Just Like Sugar®’ Cranberry Nut Cookie Recipe

By Josslyn Streett at josslynstreett.com

(Low sugar and gluten-free cranberry cookie recipe at the bottom of the page)

A few days ago I wrote a blog called ‘Just Like Sugar®’ Chocolate Chip Cookies.  I do not eat chocolate or sugar so even though I made them and ate them, I had made them for the kids with the chocolate.  I decided I wanted a cookie that I can eat for real.  I’m experimenting with a new product that a client of mine brought to me, Just Like Sugar®.  Read the first blog to find out about ‘Just Like Sugar®’ for yourself and another blog in the comment section that has written about as well and tells a bit about how the company  discovered and created the product.
To make a long story short, the cranberry cookies are just as delicious as the chocolate chip cookies especially if you cannot have chocolate or sugar but you can have cranberries.  Bottom line, I’d use it to bake over and over again.  Sawyer, my nine-year old son even liked them better than the chocolate chip cookies and he LOVES sugar of any kind.
Aftertaste
I did not taste an aftertaste like many commenters on Amazon and other blogs talk about with the baked cookies.  However, when I tested the batter before baking I did taste a bit of an after taste AND when I used it in my tea as well.  It was not distasteful to me but I can see how some people said it had an after taste.  The baking somehow takes care of that from what I experienced.
For more information about Just Like Sugar® please go to my first blog

Reiki or pray over anything that you take into your body for a healthier outcome. Blog coming soon on ‘Reiki your food’ !

Before baking with Just Like Sugar® I muscle tested myself and my assistant as I had the client who brought it in to me in the first place,  to see if our bodies “liked” the product.  We all tested positive for the Just Like Sugar® product.  We had the green light to go ahead with out baking experiment.  We also did Reiki over the batter before baking the cookies to assure the best energy and nutrition possible.  Reiki your food!!

Delicious!!

Success!

The second experiment was a success as well.  We LOVE the cranberry macadamia nut cookies and we will bake them again.
