Book Review & Excerpt- “Animal Reiki” by Elizabeth Fulton and Kathleen Prasad

Review by Josslyn Streett Reiki Master/Teacher for Rain Shadow Reiki

I am currently reading a wonderful Reiki book about using Reiki on our beloved pets and even wild animals, Animal Reiki.  (Please work on wild animals from a very safe distance.)  The book is excellent in explaining all the basics of how to do Reiki on animals and why, but my favorite part is the stories about the animals themselves and how they benefit from the Reiki.  I teach in stories and I learn in stories so this book is wonderful for me.  The authors, through their words, you can tell, are animal lovers and put the animals first and foremost in their work with them and Reiki.  The animals’ wishes are put first and all animals are treated with great respect.  The authors remind you gently many times to ASK the animal if you can do Reiki on them and to OFFER for the animal to take only what they choose to take.  I would expect nothing less from Reiki people, but to write about it, share it with the world so that others can also learn to care for and respect animals in a similar fashion is a wonderful service they have provided.

Animal Reiki” by Elizabeth Fulton and Kathleen Prasad

I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves animals, who wants to do Reiki on animals or who just wants to expand their heart chakra to be more compassionate towards animals.  Working with animals and Reiki is a wonderful way to accomplish all these goals.  I’ve been reading the book to my 12-year-old son who adores his most precious cat, Half-Pint,  more than any boy I’ve ever seen.  While she sleeps in his bed with him many nights he talks to her, listens to her and does Reiki on her too.  Their connection is quite deep.  While I’m reading the stories out loud to him about the pets who get Reiki he cries for them when they are abused, laughs at their anecdotes and shakes and giggles with joy when they are healed or adopted.  I would highly recommend you read this book out loud to your Reiki kids to instill compassion in them for pets as well.  Who knows, maybe they’ll want to learn Reiki just to work on their special pet.  This book is a tiny treasure, easy to read and such a joy.

Please continue to read below for one of my favorite animal stories in the book.  There are many.

In Love and Light of our Divine Source,

Please ask YOUR pet if you can do Reiki on them, and wait to hear their answer.  I bet they say YES!

Nanuk Finds Her Perfect Place –

Nanuk was a lovely seven-month-old Malamute dog who had been turned into a local shelter as a stray.  She was transferred to the local Northern breed rescue organization, where two volunteers, Laura and Adam, committed themselves to helping her to heal and find the right home.  However, Nanuk had no training of any kind, was terrified of people and any indoor or enclosed space, including cars, and would immediately attack another dog.  She was exceptionally intelligent and an accomplished escape artist.  When she first arrived, she was severely underweight and had no familiarity with food, bowls or leashes.  Laura and Adam deduced from her behavior that she had lived outside and been almost totally isolated and neglected.  When I met her, Laura and Adam were the only people with whom she was comfortable.  They asked me to give her a series of three treatments in the hope that her chances of adoption would be increased.

A Malamute
A Malamute

During the first treatment I sat just outside Nanuk’s run and offered her Reiki, asking her, as always, to take only the amount of energy with which she was comfortable.  The initial thin flow of energy became a moderate one, but otherwise I could barely tell that she knew I was there.  She continued her usual habit of circling rapidly around her run, jumping onto the roof of her shelter and back down repeatedly, while constantly scanning for Adam and sniffed almost imperceptibly at my hands once as she sped by in her circling.  I was otherwise completely ignored.

Undaunted, and knowing from the flow of Reiki through me that she had accepted the treatment, I returned the following day for the second treatment.  This time, when I arrived, Nanuk looked directly into my eyes for a moment and circled for five or ten minutes with less agitation.  Then she lay down with her head on her paws and slept deeply for about 25 minutes.  An especially loud noise woke her, and she got up and did a quick circle of her run, but then she lay down again and slept for another 15 minutes or so.  I sensed a strong flow of energy and was pulled deeply into the treatment until a nearby voice said, “What did you do to them?  I’ve never seen them so quiet!” I looked up and noticed that all the dogs in that area were asleep despite the high noise level in the facility.  After Nanuk awoke the second time, she went back to circling and searching for Adam with no further signs of interest in Reiki.  The flow of energy greatly decreased, and I knew she was finished with the treatment.  When I started to leave, she tried to follow me, which surprised both Laura and me.

The third treatment was uneventful.  Nanuk took a moderate amount of energy, but it felt superfluous, almost as though the work that Reiki was undertaking, whatever  that might be, had been accomplished in the second treatment.  When I left, Nanuk made sustained eye contact, but it was not clear what the results of the treatments had been.

Two days later the rescue organization received an email from a couple who had seen Nanuk’s photo and story on the internet and had fallen in love with her.  They realized that she would need a lot of love, patience and help and felt that she would teach them many things while they worked with her.

They lived in an area of California known for it’s year-round cool climate (perfect for a Malamute), in a beautiful home set among trees on many acres and surrounded by protected forest.  The house had floor-to-ceiling windows throughout, and all of the interior materials were natural wood or stone, so that being inside was as much like being outside as possible.  The couple had no children or other animals, worked at home, and immediately built her a large run so they could work on introducing her to indoor spaces as slowly as necessary.  Within 20 minutes of meeting them, Nanuk bonded with the husband and stayed by his side as Laura and Adam departed.

The couple had a scare the first full day she spent with them: Nanuk slipped her leash during a walk and ran off into the forest, but hours later she returned and walked right back up to them.  After hearing the story, I felt that Reiki had truly brought the perfect home to Nanuk. – Elizabeth”

Reboot My Life – A Hummingbird With a Message

Tenth in a series of blogs written by Josslyn Streett of Rain Shadow Reiki for her series on nutritional healing and juicing.

To catch up start with blog 1, A Sensitive System or search categories under Nutritional Healing.

Heavenly Grass

“My feet took a walk in heavenly grass.
All day while the sky shone clear as glass.
My feet took a walk in heavenly grass,
All night while the lonesome stars rolled past.
Then my feet come down to walk on earth,
And my mother cried when she give me birth.
Now my feet walk far and my feet walk fast,
But they still got an itch for heavenly grass.
But they still got an itch for heavenly grass.”

Tennessee Williams

One Journey Ends, Another Continues

Two days after I finished my ten-day fruit and vegetable cleanse for better health and cleansing my system, I was standing on the grass, drinking my lemon water in my back yard.  This has been my morning ritual since I started the cleanse.  As I felt the earth beneath my feet, grounding myself to the energy Mother Earth generously offered, I was contemplating the journey of the cleansing process and how I was feeling.  I started the cleanse to try something new to heal myself.  I have suffered from multiple chronic illnesses much of my life and am consistently searching for the puzzle pieces to healing my physical body, while at the same time living my life, working being a wife and mom.  To read the goals of my cleanse go to my second blog.

Back to the Grass

I was contemplating the journey of the cleansing process and how I was feeling afterwards.  I was a bit down because I still felt tired, I still felt unmotivated and I had some high hopes that I’d be feeling better after the cleanse.  Many people have told me that after day three, you feel great.  Not the case for me.  This has been a long healing trek for me so I knew it would take more than just a ten-day cleanse to help me heal completely, but I had hoped that I’d feel a little better when it was done. I was also aware that I was feeling the low of just finishing a big project and wondering where to go next, what was the next step? (details of the cleanse results at the bottom of the blog)

Motivation

Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead is a documentary about two men’s healing journey from severe immune system illness to extreme health in 60 days of juicing. This movie has motivated many people, including me. They have an amazing website with 5 day, 10 day and 15 day full cleanse diets by a nutritionist. I used their ten-day diet.

In the movie, “Fat,Sick and Nearly Dead” one of the women who did the ten-day cleanse, because she was having migraines regularly, said after her cleanse “I have the energy of a 21-year-old!”  I have to admit, THAT statement stuck with me.  WOW, I want the energy of a 21-year-old I thought.  I knew my health issues were more complicated than hers but this statement motivated me and still does, to keep going.  But, unlike her, I didn’t feel like a 21-year-old.  I felt tired, still.  A common problem with chronic fatigue and depression.  I knew the only choice was to keep going.  I knew I was on the right track, I just needed to keep moving forward with the juicing and eating as many fruits and vegetables as possible.  But, after years of doing this, it gets a bit daunting.  I was having a hard time staying motivated.  Cue my animal message.

By perseverance the snail reached the Ark.  C.H. Spurgeon

Cue the Hummingbird, Stage Left

The hummingbird had no marks of color.

As I stood there in the middle of my yard contemplating this, a hummingbird flew right up to my face and hovered there for what seems like a very long minute or longer.  It just didn’t leave, or move from its hover spot in front of my face.  I noticed it was an unremarkable hummingbird, all gray, no spectacular color from what I could see.  It just stayed there.  So, I stayed still, I watched it, looked at it, trying to figure out what it wanted of me.  Birds rarely come that close to me.  I have to admit, I like birds,  but do not consider myself a bird person.

Childhood Flashback

Beautiful hummingbird tattoo with a native flair.

My sister had birds growing up and I would take care of them for her when she was gone.  I never quite believed they were happy being in that cage and thought they must be very bored.  Birds needed to fly and be free, I felt.  I was also afraid of them close up, because they would peck me and make sudden movements and I never knew quite what to expect from them.  I never fully understood them or appreciated them close up.  I’m just not a bird person I guess.  (Maybe my babysitter allowing me to watch Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” at a young age didn’t help either.  Hmmm, have to meditate on that for a bit later.)  Lets put it this way, if I were to get a tattoo, it would NOT be of a bird.  But, if I were to get a tattoo and it had to be a bird, it would probably be a pretty colored one, like a hummingbird.  Anyway….

Back to the Hummingbird

So when this hummingbird came so close to my face, and stayed there for what seemed like a very long time, not only was I a bit surprised and still a bit afraid that it would peck my face, but I knew that this bird must be trying to tell me something or it wouldn’t be doing this with me.  I finally just enjoyed the moment and listened.  As I listened I heard “Patience, the journey continues!” Well I have to say that just pissed me off!!  Patience!!  I’ve been on this healing journey for twenty years almost, how patient do I have to be!?  (Apparently, more patient than I am at the moment.)

Visions Help Solidify the Message

Then suddenly, standing there on the grass, I had visions of all the lifetimes I’ve done this, many lifetimes of physical and emotional pain that I am working to rid myself of all in this one life.  It is time, THIS is the life to taste, digest, and dispose of all the pain from all those other lives.  This healing journey that I think I’ve been on for twenty years, I’ve actually been on for much, much longer.  In that scope of understanding, a few more years or even a few more lifetimes didn’t seem like so much.  Patience on that scale, actually seemed more doable than just this one lifetime of being patient.  The big picture to me made my struggles in this life seem small and easier to overcome, more like a speed-bump than a mountain.  I can’t completely explain it, but I felt more at peace, I felt like I could go on.  I felt like I could continue the healing journey with more patience.  Thank you beautiful hummingbird, it was just the message and vision I needed at that exact moment.

Though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light; I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.”  An Old Astronomer to His Pupil

Suddenly the gray hummingbird turned away from me and flew away.  He knew I’d gotten his message and he was done.  I ran in the house and wrote down the message and my experience so I could write it in this blog later.  I then picked up my “Animal Spirit Guides” book by Steven Farmer and looked up messages from hummingbirds to see what it had to say that may compliment the message I had gotten.  Here is what the book said for hummingbird that related to my situation, like it was written just for me, just for that day.

If a hummingbird shows up, it means:

  • You need to be very flexible with the twists and turns your life will take in the next days.
  • Put more emotional sweetness in your life, you need it.
  • You’re going through some very heart-opening kinds of experiences, and you’ll quite naturally draw more and more love into your life.
  • Openly express the love you have and feel for those important people in your life.
  • Give yourself the gift of as many flowers as you can, spread them around your home, and enjoy their sight and fragrance throughout the days to come.

This message also stood out and spoke to me from the book:

Call on Hummingbird when:

  • You’re feeling down and sullen and want to lighten up, have more fun, and experience more joy.
  • You find yourself around any negativity or harshness and want to protect yourself and lift your spirits.
  • You’re feeling fragmented and distracted, ruminating about the past or future, and want to be more present in the moment.

Judy at Angels and Ancestors wrote a lovely blog about the spiritual messages of hummingbirds.  Here is a passage that spoke to me:

Hummingbird is about understanding the sweetness of life, about being able to go long distances on little food, and using great courage.  Hummingbird also represents the pioneer spirit of finding new lands and moving between worlds.  When working with Hummingbird, we may ask it to bring in our Ancestors or the Old Ones who may come from their spirit place and share knowledge with us.

Hummingbirds bring the message that stamina and perseverance is important in one’s life.  One must build themselves up to be strong so that their life force is not depleted by those drawing on them for energy.  Another message that hummingbird brings to those that it appears to, is that the human must watch his or her digestive system, and that they must not take in too much sugar.

Hummingbird Totem for the full blog by Tonjha about the spiritual messages of hummingbirds.  Here is a quote that related to the cleanse experience for me.

The hummingbird can awaken us to the medicinal properties of plants. Hummingbirds teach us how to draw the life essence from flowers. “They can teach us how to use flowers to heal and win hearts in love.  Andrews says the twittering, vibrating sounds of the hummingbirds bring us an internal massage that restores health and balance.

 Doing Something Different
Vegetable juice is delicious and nutritious.
And so, the healing journey continues as life does too.  I got refocused.  I met with my doctor and had her muscle test me for the nutritional elements I need to stay focused on most to help my body heal.  My body said I need to continue to juice, lots of greens and to stay off the dairy 100%.  We also tested time frames and the testing said it will take six months to fully detox from the dairy I have eaten and drank for my whole life.  For my body, dairy is NOT GOOD!  I think for many bodies, dairy is not good.  If you suspect it is not good for you get muscle tested or give it up for a few weeks and see how you feel when you add it back in.  You’ll intuitively know.  You probably already do.  I’ve been feeling this for quite a while but just wasn’t ready to give it up until now.  I ignored what my body needed for my emotional needs at the time.  Now is the time.  Now I am ready.  This all feels right to me so I’m continuing.  Six months does not seem so daunting to me at all.  I’m enjoying the juicing and so is my husband.  He already feels the effects with more energy at work and not needing coffee to keep going throughout the day.  He’s even started to make his own juice when I don’t have time.  I’m starting a trend, I hope so.
Results of the Cleanse will be in the next blog.  Read on.  And, if you like the information you are reading, don’t forget to enter your email address to receive automatic blog updates from Rain Shadow Reiki.

Give a Reiki Hug!

People who hug more are happier!

I feel that hugs are forgotten all too often in our busy modern world and taken advantage of.  For sure by me, so, of course it must be true for many others.  Right?

It’s a very good thing my husband is such a good hugger and hand-holder, he literally keeps the good vibes flowing around here and reminds me to do so too! I more easily than him, get caught up in the “to do’s” of the modern world.  He quite often stops me, gives me a hug to help me breath deeper, calmer and to reconnect,  then we go on about our day again.  It helps so much.

So, here is a quick and easy reminder as to WHY hugs are so important and HOW to improve the hugs you give to your loved ones.

Free hugs and quote taken from article on www.squidoo.com

A HUG

It’s like an emotional Heimlich (maneuver).  Someone puts their arms around you and they give you a squeeze and all your fear and anxiety come shooting out of your mouth in a big wet wad and you can breathe again.” Chuck Charles, Pushing Daisies

WHY Hugs are so Important:

Lets change the image of a tree hugger, ANYONE and EVERYONE can benefit from hugging trees.
Marilyn Monroe photographed by Henri Cartier-Bresson, 1961

Do you know that hugs?……….

  • Reduce stress
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Boost our moods in positive ways with mood boosting bonding chemicals in our body, oxytocin and serotonin
  • Help couples be happier in their relationships with just a simple four hugs a day (at least six seconds each)
  • Babies who are hugged show more physical and brain power development
  • Hugging trees multiplies our natural cancer-killer cells, improves mood, promotes well-being, reduces anger and provides a natural healing effect.  (OMG, did you read that and actually TAKE IT IN?  Hugging trees FIGHTS CANCER!)

HOW to improve the hugs you give to your loved ones

Step 1. Find someone to hug!

REIKI HUGS!!

It is so easy to improve the Love that comes from your hugs. Put some INTENTION into your hugs!  Here are a couple of tips on how to give a Reiki hug.

  1. Find someone to hug (Ok, now what?)
  2. Ask them for a hug and GIVE the hug
  3. Sustain the hug slightly longer than usual
  4. While hugging, hold the intention that the Reiki Blessings flow out your hand chakras AND your heart chakra and into the person you are hugging. (As a beginner to Reiki hugging it may be best to start with one person at a time, then move up to more later, it’s your call.  It is always ok to send Reiki Blessings.)
  5. It may help to visualize a loving color, such as pink or green for the heart chakra.
  6.  Or visualize a shape or an item, like a heart shape, a red box of chocolates or a fuzzy kitten to help lighten your energy, mood and feelings towards the person you are hugging.  (This helps if this is a person who maybe you’ve had an argument with or difficulties of some sort.  Yes, hug our enemies too, especially our enemies.)
  7. or Chant a phrase that helps such as, “Loving blessings, love is flowing out my hands, love, love.”

Being social creatures is in our DNA, we NEED each other.
  8. Continue running the Blessing Reiki energy as long as the hug continues.
  9. Practice giving Reiki hugs as often as you can and see if you and your relationships become more loving.  See if your friends and family want to be around you more often.  See if your kids do not hug you more easily and for longer.  It has worked with my kids, it can work with yours too.
Hug your pets!

Now you may want some ideas as to WHO to give Reiki hugs to.  I say everyone!! But here are some ideas and WHY.

  • Obviously your family would be the best place to start, significant other, children, grandparents.  Children don’t want lectures, they want hugs.  I have found this out the hard way.  (How wonderful for your children to SEE you and your spouse hugging regularly.  What a wonderful mirror of a loving relationship for your family!)
  • Pets, our pet friends soak up much of our emotions in them trying to help us be happier and more balanced people on earth.  Lets take some of that burden off of them with a Reiki hug.
  • Friends
  • Anyone who is in pain, emotional, physical or other. This can lift their spirits and help them cope with the pain better, especially with Reiki blessings.  (Please do not use other symbols unless you have their permission first)
  • Trees and plants  – Lets be Tree Huggers!! They fight cancer for you AND it just FEELS good to hug a tree.  (How do I know? I DO IT REGULARLY!! I am an admitted Tree Hugger!)
  • Other Reiki friends, lets spread the Love and Light through Reiki hugs.  What better way to practice and perfect your Reiki hug than to practice on other Reiki community members.  Come to circle and lets practice our Reiki hugs!!
Hug the elderly, you will both be rewarded.
  • The elderly, we sometimes forget how much touch heals, one can heal down to the soul with a good hug.  What a beautiful gift to give and receive.
  • Our enemies, or more like people you’ve had differences with.  They probably need a Reiki hug really badly.  (See if you can’t turn an enemy into a friend again with a Reiki hug, both must choose to hug, of course.)
  • Rocks and crystals – I know, I’m a little loopy when it comes to my healing stones, but I really do love them.  I regularly sit and hold my rocks and crystals to let them know how much I appreciate their healing gifts that they lend to me.  Then I give them a Reiki hug, a cleansing and an energizing too.  I have very happy rocks!
  • Anyone else you can think of to hug?  Please comment here on WHO YOU ARE GOING TO PRACTICE YOUR REIKI HUG ON!!  Watch out, it’s contagious!

Arm ourselves for war?  No!  All the arms we need are for hugging.” ~Author Unknown

A special Thank You to my Reiki and Stones and Crystals teacher, Jade Elizabeth for sharing this idea with me many years ago.  She gives GREAT Reiki hugs!!

Frog Totem

One of the many aspects of living in the Pacific North West that I am so enamored with is hearing the frogs in the spring time.  (I’m sure this happens other places but not where I lived before) We have a creek and a pond in our backyard and every year in the spring we are honored by the pleasing symphony of the frogs song.  I heard them last night for the first time this spring, the night before the new moon, and I remembered once again, how much they help me to connect to the earth and her cycles of seasons, change and growth.

When I was a little girl in Southern California I used to fill up my dad’s wheel barrow with dirt, plants, water and sticks to make a habitat for the frogs and toads I’d find.  I thought I was helping them, of course, by making them this nice safe place to live.  I’d get my Noah’s ark that I’d collected piece by piece from Arco service stations and add that to the scene for fun.  I spent hours, days playing this way.  I’d let them go at the end of the day because as most moms do, mine told me I had to.  In my memories I spent a great deal of time playing with my arc and the frogs.  I’d forgotten until I moved up here how much I was fascinated by frogs when I was a kid.  I guess that’s true for a lot of people, as we get older, go to school, then college or a job, we lose touch with some of the nature we treasured as a child.  Moving to the Olympic Peninsula has helped me to get some of that admiration back.  I don’t have to fly or travel to nature, it’s right here in my yard again, all around me wherever I go here.

Western Green Tree Frog

It always amazes me how the frogs  all start-up their earthly singing at the same time with one little guy or gal leading the way, then end all at the same time.  Robert and I sit up in bed listening, enjoying the natural melodic hum of their reverberations.  In spiritual circles it is said that frogs are the pulse of the earth.  That they feel the energy from the earth and through their night sounds are relaying to us what is going on with the weather, with the earth and even with us.  When doing research on frogs I read stories such as in China, where a huge frog migration was seen as a bad omen by many of the local people.  The government told them it was a normal propagation migration.  Seven days later they had a large earthquake and thousands of people were killed.  When civilians were angered by the scientists not being able to predict the earthquake,as the frogs did, Chinese scientists stated that animals have a much better sense of detecting natural disasters.

Original art by Sue Coccia at Earth Art International in Edmonds, Washington

In Feng Shui it is said that a family of frogs living in your garden will bring good luck to your home and it’s occupants.  In Chinese culture frogs and toads are symbols of immortality, healing, money, the moon and frivolity.  In the North West Coast People’s beliefs frogs are considered good luck as well and it is not considered wise to demean or injure them.  And they have native stories about little children who have done this with negative repercussions.  In the Bible many of the stories of frogs speak of them being unclean, dangerous spirits and not to be trusted.  I liked this Hebrew translation of the stories of frogs from the Bible that I read on this website best.  You can read about that at this website if you like.  She does a much better job and is more an expert than I am.  It is extremely interesting.

“The frog does not drink up the Pond in which he lives.”  Sioux

If you enjoy the sounds of the frogs as much as I do and feel frogs may be one of your totem animals then read on.  I have enclosed a transcript from my favorite animal totem book by Dr. Steven D. Farmer, “Animal Spirit Guides.”  Enjoy.

If Frog shows up, it means:  (choose only those that apply to you)  (shows up means, in life, dreams, meditations, a story you hear, etc.)

  • If you hear a frog during the daytime, it will rain very soon.
  • Do a physical cleanse to detoxify your body.
  • Do an emotional cleanse by letting yourself really feel your emotions, and cry as much as you need to in order to clear and release any emotional toxicity.
  • Singing or chanting out loud will help you feel more balanced, at peace, and connected to the divine.
  • You’re entering into a time of plenty and abundance.
  • This is the start of a slow and steady transformational process for you, a movement from an old life to a new.
Call on FROG when:
  • It’s time to cleanse your life of people, places, or things that no longer fit in with your present lifestyle and who you are.
  • You’re in the midst of any life change, whether small or large, and you need the emotional sustenance and strength to go through it in a fluid and graceful way.
  • You’re planning to do a clearing and blessing ceremony for your home, office, or a specific space.
  • You feel intimidated or hesitant about honestly stating your thoughts, feelings, or opinions to someone.
  • You simply feel overwhelmed with negativity and want to clear it up.
If FROG is your POWER ANIMAL:  (Most will apply if FROG is your power animal)
  • You’re a very sensitive and compassionate person, and readily express deep feelings in words and actions.
  • Your voice, and especially your singing, can at times arouse deep emotions, yet at the same time soothe anyone within its range.
  • To others you initially seem rather remote and self-absorbed, yet once they get past their first impressions of you, they discover the depth and nobility of your character.
  • In your work, you seem to plod along very slowly and have trouble getting started, but you stay with it and get the job done.  You enjoy the study of ancient mysteries and particularly the art of magic.
