Reiki for Your Animals

Reiki is Safe for Anyone and Any Animal

Reiki for your Pets talk at Best Friend Nutrition June 2013. Cockatoo Sarah.

What I truly love about Reiki is that it is safe for anyone; people, children, babies, the elderly and yes, even your beloved pets.  Reiki is the gentlest form of healing I have experienced, making it perfect for you pet; from the smallest fish, hamster or bird to the largest horses, goats, llamas or alpacas, which are popular in Sequim, WA, where I live.  And, of course Reiki is wonderful for our most loved cats and dogs as well.  I know first hand since I have a rescue dog and three cats who all receive Reiki regularly and love it.

Reiki Heals on All Levels for Pets Too

Reiki works to balance the energy systems of all living things and in doing so allows the bodies to heal themselves.  Reiki heals on all levels with people and therefore it will heal on all levels for animals as well.  Whether they are hurting physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually, Reiki will get to the core of what needs to be healed quickly, easily and gently.  Animals are much like kids, once they trust you and the energy you are sending to them, they will take it in easily and heal quickly because they are closer to our Divine Source and have memories and abilities that many adult humans have long forgotten.  This allows the belief system of animals to be more open and filled with many less blockages than adults have, therefore the Reiki can flow without hitch and do what it is here to do, heal.

How Reiki can help animals heal from ‘Animal Reiki’ by Elizabeth Fulton and Kathleen Prasad

Reiki can help animals in myriad ways.  Practicing Reiki with your animal companion deepens your bond as well as the level of understanding and trust between you.  With healthy animals, Reiki can help maintain health on all levels.  Reiki can heal physical illness and injury in animals as well as problems on emotional and spiritual levels.  It is a powerful tool for emotional healing following trauma, abuse, neglect, fear and trust issues, reaching deeply into even the most damaged spirits.

Doing Reiki on your pets regularly builds a strong bond between you and them and builds trust. Children doing Reiki on animals builds compassion for all living creatures.

For high-strung or nervous animals, Reiki induces deep relaxation and stress-reduction and, over time, can reduce the tendency toward nervousness.  Reiki can accelerate healing after surgery or illness.  It complements both conventional and alternative therapies and can enhance their actions and lessen their side effects.  Finally, for a dying animal and his people, Reiki provides compassionate support that can make the transition more peaceful for all concerned.”

When To Use Reiki on Your Pets

Young or old Reiki can be used with any of your pets.  Use Reiki when they are ill, getting older or young and rambunctious, for physical or emotional trauma and even to heal some past life karma that they have carried with them.  Also, it is important to Reiki yourself in order to help your pet be their healthiest and happiest as well.  More on this in a bit.

How to Approach Your Pet with Reiki

Often animals will sniff your hands to get a feel for the Reiki before they choose to take any or not. Our cat Inky is sniffing this boys hands during a Kid's Reiki circle to make his decision. Never force an animal to participate. This builds patience in the child, another great outcome of doing Reiki on pets.

It is key to be properly trained with a Reiki I certificate first.  Then approach your pet with love and compassion, no ego and with choice.  Give them a choice as to whether or not they take the Reiki energy and how much they choose to take.  The key in working with animals is compassion and love.  If you show compassion to them in your actions, this will allow them to learn to trust you and this new energy they may be feeling for the first time.

Start earning their trust by doing Reiki long distance or beaming it from across the room or simply sitting in one place that is comfortable for you and simply allowing the Reiki to flow from your hands.  Then hold the intention that the animal will take as much or as little as they choose, or even none.  If they come over and sit on your lap then they may want hands on Reiki and you can trust your intuition as to whether or not to place your hands directly on your pet or above them.  If they do not come close this does not mean they are not taking the Reiki energy, they may just be taking it from a distance and that is o.k. too.  Step out of your own way and allow the animal to guide the Reiki session, not you.

At first Mandy wouldn't take Reiki from me because I am her alpha. After having one of my students do Reiki on her and me doing some long distance, she soon started taking Reiki from me and is very happy with it now.

My rescue dog, Mandy, loves hands on Reiki and allows it regularly from just about anyone who offers it.  My cats on the other hand choose to sit near me while I am running Reiki on myself while they get the ‘run off’ from me.  They prefer this to hands on Reiki.  Every animal is different and needs to be respected.  When they feel respected by you then the rest will come naturally, if we just allow.

A Reiki Cat Story

By Josslyn Streett, Reiki Master/Teacher for Rain Shadow Reiki

I was called by a student of mine to come and work on her cat.  Her cat, Lulu, has had skin issues from time to time but it had gotten much worse lately.  They had changed her food to a grain free food and that helped for a while but now the skin problem was back.  She had dry skin and scabs all over her body.  Lulu usually sleeps with my student but had been laying on her husband lately and my client thought maybe she was trying to heal him since he’d recently been diagnosed with cancer.  I took all this into account as I considered how to approach the situation.

My student does Reiki on her cat regularly so she is used to it and comfortable with it, but her cat doesn’t know me.  So, while I was sitting in meditation asking my guides for guidance on how to approach this cat they showed me sitting on the couch and beaming the Reiki out to the room in general and allowing Lulu to take it or not.  So, I did this.  As much as I wanted to help their cat, I did my best to set my expectations aside and just allow the Reiki to flow, knowing she would either take it or not.

After a few minutes of letting the Reiki flow though the room Lulu sniffed my hands and left the room with a credulous look on her face.  Shortly after, Lulu’s sister Pippa came up and sniffed my hands and then laid down with her back to me about a foot away.  She was saying that she wanted some Reiki but for me to not put my hands on her.  After a while of her sitting and taking what Reiki she wanted, she got up and left.  Shortly after that their other cat Pooh Jr. came up to me and sat directly on my lap and allowed me to do Reiki directly on her.  After a while she got up, adjusted herself in a new position and laid down again for more Reiki on her hips.  She was telling me exactly where and how she wanted her Reiki. It was great.  She also allowed me to receive some information for her parents about her age and physical condition that was important to know.  She told me that she is older than they suspect and has more inflammation in her hips and joints than they know about and would be open to receiving Reiki from them more often.

After Pooh Jr. finished with her Reiki and passed on her message, she got up and left.  I was still beaming the Reiki in the room in general in case Lulu wanted some.  I held the intention that she could take it if she wanted and where or how she wanted and just sat and waited.  Lulu did not come but stayed a safe distance away in the next room.  I asked my guides without invading Lulu’s space and desire for distance if there was any information they could pass on to me to help Lulu’s parents with her skin condition.  They told me that Lulu is indeed taking on much of her families stresses and chose to do this to help them and she was a little miffed at me doing healing on her.  She’d accept it from her mom but from me it was different.  My guides showed me a visual of Lulu doing healing and taking on the energy herself.  So, I explained this to her mom and how it would be helpful for Lulu if her mom could give her a visual image of how to NOT take on the energy herself but to direct the energy away from her and into Mother Earth for recycling.  This is a technique I have written about on my blog for my human clients but there is no reason it couldn’t work just as well for a cat.  Animals are quite visual and if we visualize something with the intention of them getting it, they will.  They can read our minds visually and often times read us empathically as well.

I asked Lulu if I may take her photo for my story and she sat up and posed unlike the other two cats. She is a proud cat which is maybe why she didn't want me working on her. I do believe she took the Reiki she wanted and in the way she wanted, on top of the fish tank. LOL

They can be amazing and natural healers.  It is not unheard of for our pets to take on our emotional baggage in an effort to help their humans.  But Lulu actually sees herself as a healer and is going through the process of doing this.

Lulu’s mom has been working with her on this visualization and when I checked back Lulu’s skin was much better.  She did take the Reiki that she wanted from the other room or even before she left the room, but I felt the process of cleansing the energy was what Lulu needed most.  Her mom can continue to do Reiki on her and practicing this process with her will help her to be a much more effective healer without hurting herself in the process.

Our Pets Want to Help Us

Animals can be healers too!
Animals can be healers too!

Our pets love us so much that it is natural for them to want to help us.  Doing Reiki on ourselves, being as healthy as we can be on all levels is the first step to helping our pets to be healthy and happy too.  Take a Reiki I class and learn how to heal yourself, others and your beloved pets as well.

  1. Great story, Joss. I forgot to mention to you that Mike “saged” the house last week and Lulu let him sage her, as well. Lulu is still doing well, but hasn’t been sleeping with us since Mike’s cancer scare. Thank you for everything you do.

  2. This is amazing! I would love to have some Reiki work done on my German Shephard/Collie mix (Natasha). She suffers from severe separation anxiety, and she is especially attached to me, which makes my life very difficult because I cannot leave her anywhere, and working and finding a job is out of the question. I am at the point where I need to re-home her so I can work, but again, she is so attached to me I know she will be devastated, and I adore her so my heart is broken 🙁

  3. Thank you for allowing me to share your amazing cats and story. She’s a little healer that one, she may want to be attuned to Reiki. Ask her and see what she says. I was thinking about coming back over to send some more Reiki though the room to see what happens. Get some DVR shows ready for me. LOL. Keep up the visualizations to help her. It won’t take her long to get it. Love and Light to you all, Joss

  4. Dawn, I would be happy to work on Natasha, love working on dogs. If it is long distance I’d need a photo of her via email. I also have a dog with separation anxiety and the Reiki has helped a lot. I would recommend taking a class so you could do Reiki on her yourself. Also, might I recommend you look into a Thunder Shirt. You can find them on Amazon.com for about $30 or $40 each. They act like a security blanket around their body snuggling them close so they feel safer. I put this on my dog Mandy every time we go out. If it is a severe case then you can put them on for long periods of time. But, like anything, I feel taking breaks from the shirts are important too. Try this and then email me at rainshadowreiki@gmail.com if you want to set up an apt via phone or Skype for Natasha. It’s hard to think about not being with our beloved pets, for sure. Love and Light to you my dear, Joss

  5. Dawn, I can attest that Reiki has helped Joss’ dog, Mandy, so much. When we first met Mandy, she was a very timid dog, and now she is a dog that wants to be with everyone, even when the house is full of screaming kids. LOL

Joss, that would be awesome if you want to come back to do some more Reiki. Lulu’s been very receptive to me doing Reiki on her, so maybe by the next time you come over she’ll be ready for you.

  6. Joss, Another good post with lots of useful, practical information and personal experience to deepen the understanding of the process and its potential. Here’s an experience I had today out at the Dungeness Bay Refuge with a dog who wanted a session. A man was out walking his two dogs and I noticed the larger one had a big growth on her chest. We struck up a hearty conversation with the fellow and as usual, I invited the larger dog to come for a back scratch if it wanted one. The little dog was content to bark at a passing dog. The bigger dog immediately sashayed up close on my right side and I scratched her back and she relaxed. Then she moved onto my left side and as I held my hand down, she crawled underneath it and just stayed there absorbing Reiki energy. She had already “turned the light switch on” herself as one of your sons has said about starting the process. I could hear her breathing calm and become even. She stood there and I could feel the channeling of energy going on and then she moved away but stayed by my side and I continued a distance healing until I could feel she was turning it down much like a reastat on a switch until her own energy took over and we disconnected. As affirmation, I looked up and four bald eagles were flying over us with two of them clutching talons and doing their mating routine…awesome experience to witness. You just never know how it’s going to manifest and what power is drawn into the spiral. Love and light, Patricia

  7. Thanks Pat, aka Alpine Lady, what a magnificent story of how our animal friends communicate to us exactly what they need and want if we simply listen. So glad you were listening. It is amazing and quite beautiful how they direct the sessions themselves and for me it is quite refreshing. Thanks so much for sharing that story. My kids and I had a great encounter with two eagles last week as well, they are out and about in plethora lately, and in couples. Love to you, I always appreciate your loving comments, support and constant loyalty to Reiki and my blog. Joss
